Rasulullah Shallallahu Alaihi Wasallam bersabda: Barang siapa mencari ilmu untuk membangga-banggakan itu kepada para ulama atau untuk mendebat dengannya orang-orang bodoh atau untuk menarik hati manusia padanya, maka ia ke neraka (Riwayat Al Hakim, dan Dishahihkan oleh Al Hafidz As Suyuthi)

Al Allamah Al Munawi menjelaskan bahwa bahwa hadits di atas adalah peringatan bagi siapa saja yang mencari ilmu dalam rangka mencari dunia. Imam Adz Dzahabi sendiri menggolongkan berbuatan ini sebagai dosa besar, sebagaimana dijelaskan dalam karya beliau Al Kabair. (Faidh Al Qadir, 6/20)
