alhikmah.ac.id – Pertumbuhan pemeluk agama Islam di Inggris terus mengalami kenaikan dari tahun ke tahun. Sebaliknya pemeluk kristen terus mengalami penurunan, gereja semakin ditinggalkan.
Dengan bertambahnya jumlah pemeluk Islam, secara otomatis akan menambah masjid atau mushola. Sementara untuk membangun masjid baru, akan melalui proses perizinan yang tidak mudah dan tidak jarang mengalami penolakan. Sebagai alternatif, umat Islam Inggris memiliki inisiatif untuk membeli gereja yang kosong dari jamaat. Kemudian akan dialih fungsikan menjadi masjid.
Berikut ada 4 gereja yang berganti menjadi masjid yang berada di Inggris
1. Gereja Bukit Sion Inggris
Sebuah gereja di Kota Clitheroe, Lancashire, Inggris beralih fungsi menjadi sebuah masjid. Alasan utamanya adalah karena gereja tua tersebut sudah tidak lama terpakai. Sementara itu dikawasan tersebut banyak terdapat warga muslim yang membutuhkan sebuah mesjid untuk beribadah. Sejak tahun 2006 warga muslim mengajukan gereja tersebut agar berubah fungsi sebagai mesjid.
Bangunan itu dahulu bernama gereja Bukit Sion. Gereja ini merupakan salah satu bangunan paling terkenal di Clithheroe. Namun entah apa yang terjadi, gereja ini ditutup selama 14 tahun, bahkan gereja ini juga sempat beberapa kali beralih fungsi sebelum menjadi mesjid. Gereja ini pernah menjadi sebuah toko amunisi, pabrik kotak logam dan terakhir digunakan sebagai pabrik garmen.
2. Gereja Katolik St Petrus di Inggris
Sebuah gereja Katolik di kota Cobridge, Inggris terpaksa dijual setelah mengalami penurunan umat yang datang beribadah, bahkan ketika misa, gereja tersebut hanya dihadiri oleh segelintir orang. Selain jumlah penurunan jemaat yang datang, pihak gereja juga sudah tidak mampu lagi untuk membiayai gereja itu menjadi lebih baik lagi.
Setelah sejumlah penawaran diterima, namun pengurus gereja mengatakan bahwa komunitas muslim lokal di wilayah tersebut telah membuat penawaran terbaik. Setelah berkonsultasi, akhirnya gereja itu resmi dijual kepada komunitas muslim lokal tersebut untuk kemudian gereja tersebut diubah menjadi sebuah mesjid.
3. Gereja Protestan di Inggris
Masjid Jamme Brick Lane yang terletak di London ini merupakan salah satu masjid berpengaruh di Inggris. pada awalnya Masjid Jamme ini bukan difungsikan sebagai tempat ibadah umat Islam. Didirikan pada tahun 1743, bangunan ini merupakan sebuah gereja Protestan yang kemudian berubah menjadi sebuah chapel sebelum akhirnya pada tahun 1976 bangunan tua ini difungsikan sebagai Masjid Jamme London.
Masjid Jamme sangat terkenal di sepanjang daratan Eropa dan merupakan pusat kegiatan umat muslim di London. Tidak hanya menjadi tempat beribadah saja, mesjid ini juga menjadi tempat pendidikan anak-anak muslim di London dan pusat literatur Islam. Selain itu masjid ini juga dilengkapi oleh empat kelas belajar yang biasanya digunakan oleh para guru di sana untuk mengajar baca Al Quran dan juga kajian Islam.
4. Gereja Gothik di Inggris
Gereja Gotik yang terletak di Didstrik Disbury, Manchester, Inggris memiliki arsitektur bangunan gothik modern. Bangunan yang dulunya merupakan gereja, sekarang beralih menjadi masjid setelah jemaat gereja mengalami penurunan sementara komunitas muslim di daerah itu semakin bertambah. Warga muslim kota Manchester membeli gereja tersebut dan mengubahnya menjadi sebuah mesjid. Patung dan seluruh ornamen milik gereja tersebut dipindahkan.
Sebuah karpet berwarna hijau dipasang di aula utama, sementara mimbar dipasang di bagian sayap bangunan sesuai dengan arah kiblat. Sementara ruangan yang dulunya bekas ruangan keuskupan dipakai untuk tempat berwudhu. Sekarang mesjid ini diberi nama mesjid Didsbury Mosque .
