Pada suatu hari beliau dengan keretanya melewati seorang yahudi Mesir. Yahudi itu adalah seorang penjual minyak. Sebagaimana kebiasaan tukang minyak, si yahudi itu pakaiannya kotor. Melihat arak-arakan itu, si yahudi itu menghadang dan menghentikannya.
Si yahudi itu berkata kepada Ibnu Hajar: “Sesungguhnya Nabi kalian berkata: ‘Dunia itu penjaranya orang yang beriman dan surganya orang kafir’,  (HR. Muslim).
Namun kenapa engkau sebagai seorang beriman menjadi seorang hakim besar di Mesir, dalam arak-arakan yang mewah, dan dalam kenikmatan seperti ini. Sedang aku -yang kafir- dalam penderitaan dan kesengsaran seperti ini?”
Maka Ibnu Hajar menjawab: “Aku dengan keadaanku yang penuh dengan kemewahan dan kenimatan dunia ini bila dibandingkan dengan kenikmatan surga adalah seperti sebuah penjara. Sedang penderitaan yang kau alami di dunia ini dibandingkan dengan yang adzab neraka itu seperti sebuah surga.”
Maka si yahudi itupun kemudian langsung mengucapkan syahadat: “Asyhadu anla ilaha illallah. Wa asyhadu anna Muhammad rasulullah,” tanpa berpikir panjang langsung masuk Islam.
